We’ve spoken many times over the years against the whole “never ever work for free” mentality. Should you value yourself and make sure you get SOMETHING out of it? Absolutely… but realize that sometimes payment comes in far better forms than money, especially to those of you either starting off in your trade or moving to a new network (geographical or sociological). When we first started, we were anxious to dig in, work with things that we might have otherwise been denied access to, and to find new connections. We’ve spoken recently on how grateful we are to John Tosco for giving us a huge step up in our first couple months and he is a PERFECT example of how the payoff can work. First off, we got more experience, we met with plenty of musicians we still work with, we met some people in the Charlotte network that lead to so many connections if you trace it back (I couldn’t even tell you how far reaching the web really would go, but it’s out there), and honestly – some of the people we’re still lucky enough to call near and dear, family and friends!
Two of such friends were Therese & Doug Bartholomew. If you’ve been familiar with us for quite a while, you may remember that we actually worked on a documentary years ago called “The Final Gift” with Therese. Over the years, we’ve gotten to also know Therese & Doug’s respective kiddos from their previous marriages. Trea is Therese’s oldest, and our own resident Fabio (or maybe moreso Jax Teller… we’re not sure, but he’s kind of a badass and could end you, so we’ll let him call himself whatever he wants really). Trea has been seeing this won’t-take-junk-off-no-one chickie named Kayla for as long as we’ve know him. When Kayla told us that Therese & Doug told her that she could pick whomever she wanted to shoot her wedding and they’d take care of the money portion of it… she jumped straight to us… and I can NOT stress how ridiculously honored & humbled we were to find that out! We, like her, excitedly said “yes!” when asked, fast forward a year or so down the road, and you have the below date we captured!
Trea and Kayla got married at the beach in October (it’s almost like they knew our favorite beach/month combo and decided to do us a solid)! It was truly a laid-back love-fest where I think we laughed more than any other wedding ever and that’s a pretty high bar to set. Therese, Doug, Trea, and Kayla aren’t the only wild ones in the bunch – this entire family believes in living life passionately, fully, and laughing more than often! We spent the whole weekend with them at the beach house they had rented, and even stuck around the following Sunday night to just play games, watch the season premiere of Walking Dead, and share in some drinks with them. We got to go totally native! 😀 This weekend, as amazing as a place as it holds in our heads, hearts, and photography work – it wouldn’t have come to pass if not for those chance meetings YEARS ago because we weren’t afraid to bet on ourselves and the value beyond money. It makes us that much more grateful when we look through, start laughing again, and present this Ocean Isle wedding to you!
